Sam Dastor:
`Shakespeare in Love – A performance of his sonnets`In tonight`s lecture you will be invited to listen to a fascinating live performance of 39 of Shakespeare`s sonnets by the English actor Sam Dastor. This is what he says about the origin of the poems and his choice for this evening:
„I have long believed that the sonnets are highly autobiographical. I know that there are many critics who pour scorn on that idea but they seem to me to be too full of little details which can only refer to Shakespeare’s per-sonal life. So the purpose of my programme is to focus on Shakespeare’s love for the young man (whoever he was ) in the first 126 sonnets (of which I do 32) and for his mistress in the final 28 (of which I do 7).“
After graduating at Cambridge University Sam Dastor was trained at the Royal Academy of Art (RADA). He started his career in theatre appearing in numerous plays staged – amongst others – by the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. His experience as an actor stretches far beyond the stage into television, film and radio broadcast. Over a period of 30 years he starred in a great number of TV programmes, series and films, including `Julius Caesar` and `The comedy of errors`. He made his appearance in films such as `The Life and Death of Peter Sell-ers`, `Such a Long Journey`, `Jinnah` and `Made` Sam has also read many audio books including ‚Jewel in the Crown‘ and ‚Passage to India‘ for which he won an Audiofile Award in the USA, and `Kim for Cover to Cover` which was chosen by Rachel Bedford of The Daily Telegraph as the best audio book of 1997.
